Leatherman Skeletool - A Stripped Down, Lightweight Product Made With The Most Used Functions Offered By Leatherman
I have owned some multi tools over the years, but never really had a use for them. I use to pack one for fixing saddles and horse gear whilst on the go for a short period of time but wasn't too pleased with them.
For the most part they are a group of unsubstantial miniature functions with far too many ornaments and toys fitted to be very useful for jobs except the most simple of tasks.
When the better quality tools became available they were substantial and chunky again, in some people's view with too much junk attached. For a shortwhile it seemed that the multi tool brands aimed to make the biggest oversized, heaviest pocket tool available. It brought back memories of the cell phone race with so many trying to pack as much stuff as possible into a multi tool. It got pretty odd for a while.
For kayaking journeys I always packed a little tool kit with what I knew I would use instead of a heavy tool. It weighed in at a very slightly over a pound but inevitably it would get used at least once on a longer trip. The kit was normally made up of a small stubby screwdriver, a set of pliers, some spare screws, plus some wire. I not long ago found a multi tool that does make sense to bring with me though.
Ironically, they have been for sale for a while but I neglected them. A while back, I had to fit a shower head but had no tools. I ended up doing it with just a can opener and a pair of scissors. I thought this would be a perfect time to start making use of my multi tool again. I digged through the junk drawer and found it later that night, I then remembered why it got stuck there there initially. Because it was junk.
Enter the Skeletool by Leatherman:
At around 5 ounces it could be stored in my pocket unnoticed most of the time and it eliminated the need for two items from my tool kit. The super point is that for the world of camping where you might need to fix a gas cooker, a metal buckle on a backpack, the zipper on a tent, or tighten up a broken canoe seat; the Skeletool is all you need without any of the fluff.
First off the pliers are normally standard for multi tools. They have incorporated wire cutters and they go through coat hangers pretty well so will cope with the brass wire I carry.
Next the blade, simple to open with one hand using a thumb hole. The blade was so sharp it could cut the corner off a piece of paper without any issues.
The screwdriver attachment comes with a couple of phillips and two slotted bits. The bits are exclusive to Leatherman as opposed to industry standard, but they do lock into the unit with a spring clip. The extra one is tucked away in the handle and is a friction fit.
Finally, its well constructed and put together by my standards - I am pretty fussy with stuff like this. I purchased my Leatherman Skeletool at Leatherman Store and they also sell the Leatherman Skeletool CX.
