The Functions of the Prostate

The prostate is a walnut shaped gland about one and a half-inch in size. The prostate gland plays an important part in the male reproductive system. It is an exocrine gland made up of thousands of tiny fluid-producing glands. Exocrine glands are glands that secrete fluid to the outside of the body through duct or cavity. Sweat glands are examples of exocrine gland. The prostate is located just below the bladder between the urethra and the rectum. The prostate surrounds the urethra, which is the canal that carries urine and semen. Although the prostate is known as a gland, perhaps an organ would be more descriptive. The prostate is made of two lobes and is completely surrounded by an outer tissue layer.

The prostate gland produces a fluid, which forms part of semen, the fluid that carries sperm during orgasm. The prostate gland is an essential component of the male reproductive system. Its major function is to secrete a fluid, which activates the sperm as they are being ejaculated. This fluid is stored with sperm in the seminal vesicles. When a man climaxes, muscular contractions cause the prostate to secrete this fluid into the urethra, where it is expelled through the penis. The fluid bathes the sperm, providing them with the required nourishment to 'swim'. The prostate also helps to control the release of urine.

Problems Affecting the Prostate

Enlarged prostate is a common problem for men. It will affect almost all men as they grow older, especially those above 50 years old. There are fortunately, many effective remedies. Consult your doctor if the symptoms of enlarged prostate are affecting your quality of life. More importantly, however, you should get yourself checked out to ensure that the symptoms are not due to prostate cancer.

The most serious problem that can affect the prostate is prostate cancer. Prostate cancer is one of the most common cancers for male. There are treatment options available for prostate cancer. However, early detection and treatment is crucial for effective treatment. Hence, it is important to have regular health screening especially for men older than 50.
