It Is Possible to Shrink Prostate?

How to shrink prostate is probably on the mind of many men who face problem. Many will wonder whether it is possible to shrink prostate in the first place. Most men as they get older, they will get enlarged prostate. That can result in a number of problems such as frequent urination, urinary infections and higher risk of bladder stones. These symptoms are very uncomfortable and inconvenient. They can also be bit dangerous to a man's health. If you do suspect that you have an enlarged prostate, you should consult your doctor. If you do not have any serious problem other than the enlarged prostate, your doctor will probably try to shrink the prostate. Here are some of the things your doctor may try in order to shrink the prostate.

Medication to Shrink Prostate

Your doctor will probably recommend medication as the first step to shrink prostate. Some drugs, such as finasteride or dutasteride, work by reducing the hormones that contribute to an enlarged prostate. These drugs will either halt the swelling or shrink the prostate. Alpha-blockers, such as doxasozin or tamsulosin, help to relax muscles around the prostate and bladder, which will reduce some of the symptoms of an enlarged prostate. A combination of both the hormone-reducing drugs and the alpha-blockers is a common treatment plan to shrink prostate.

Surgery to Shrink Prostate

If medication is ineffective or cannot shrink the prostate enough, surgery is the other option to shrink prostate. Surgery will involve removing part of the prostate tissue by performing surgery through the urethra. Some treatments involve using a catheter to transfer some small amount of heat to the prostate in order to destroy tissue in localized areas. Many of these are day surgeries.

If these procedures do not work, doctors may resort to transurethral resection of the prostate to remove the excess tissue. A small electrical loop is inserted through the urethra to both cuts tissue and seals blood vessels. The removed parts will be flushed out at the end of surgery. This is a fairly simple procedure with a short recovery time. The only main side effect is that it may result in sperm entering the bladder during sex, which this is not considered to be harmful. Doctors are still exploring other ways to shrink prostate, so there are new treatments in the future.
